Tour de France
First organized in 1903 to increase newspaper sales, the Tour de France has grown into the most renowned and prestigious events in cycling. The 3,500 km race is typically held each July over the course of 23 days. The number of teams usually varies between 20-22 with nine riders on each team. While the exact course of the race changes year to year, some segments remain the same, such as the passage through the mountain chains of Pyrenees and the Alps, and the finish on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. Spectators have been known to camp out for weeks along the popular parts of the course to catch a glimpse of the athletes.
